If bourbon and horseracing isn’t enough for you gents, boxing fans will relish the Ali museum in downtown Louisville. Interactive exhibits let you spar with the king of the ring, and rewatch his famous battles, be it with Foreman, Fraser or the media. It retells his inspiring life, explains his brash politics, from his refusal to fight in Vietnam to his conversion to Islam. You can visit Columbia Gym, where Ali first trained and discover why a stolen bike forged the world’s best-ever boxer.
For car-mad fans there’s the home of THE American sports car, the Corvette museum in Bowling Green. OK, you can’t drive the “American dream on wheels” (the owners lend them to the museum and they’re not gonna let any Tom, Dick or Limey horse around with a £1m motor) but you can certainly learn about the history of these amazing cars and see them up close.
There’s history aplenty: with the pioneer Daniel Boone’s museum, Abraham Lincoln’s birthplace, and the General Patton museum. Not forgetting the bloody civil war battlefield at Perryville, where the Confederates won. And yes, they do re-enact the bloodbath!
For music lovers, there’s the fabled Renfro County venue, the home of live bluegrass music, or the country music trail. There’s also the mad Beatles festival, held every …., bringing scores of fab four tribute bands from as far afield as Germany and Japan. Sound mad! It is!
